How to Style Travel Photography on Your Walls: Size, Format, and Placement

Most people buy a print before they have figured out where it goes. That is fine. Here is a straightforward guide to making it work once you have it.

Size

The most common mistake is going too small. A print that looks large on screen will disappear on a wall. If the wall is more than 10 feet wide, you want a print that is at least 24 inches wide. For a standard living room wall, 18x24 is the minimum for a single statement piece. For a bedroom, 8x12 to 12x16 framed prints work well in groups of two or three.

Format by room

Acrylic works best in rooms with hard surfaces: concrete, white walls, dark wood, steel. The high-gloss finish reads as a design object, not just a decoration. The Sahara Sands, Great Pyramid, and Acropolis acrylics all work well in this context.

Framed prints work in most rooms and are the most versatile format. Oak and ash frames read warm and work in rooms with natural wood and linen. Black frames are more neutral and work in both contemporary and traditional spaces.

Placement

The center of a print should hang at eye level, which is typically 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Above a sofa, leave 6 to 8 inches between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the frame. Above a bed, leave 4 to 6 inches.

For a gallery wall, lay all the prints on the floor first and arrange them before putting anything on the wall. Start with the largest piece as the anchor and work outward.
